Recovery

Fresh legs. Free first step.

Getting faster is only half training. The other half is rest, sleep and food. Before a big game, carnival or trial, do a little less and keep the good bits. Here is how, kid simple.

Hidden tiredness

Tired can hide.

Hard weeks stack up tiredness, even when you still look fine. Think of it as an invisible backpack. Rest and lighter days take it off, so the first three steps feel free again.

The invisible backpack Line drawing. On the left a young player trudges with a heavy red backpack labelled tired. On the right the backpack is off and the player runs free. TIRED HEAVY. SLOW START. LIGHT. FREE FIRST STEP.
Kid line: Rest takes the heavy bag off your legs.

Backpack check

Parents: if mood or first step spark dips midweek, protect sleep and cut extra training before adding more.

Wrong

Heavy legs

Slow first step, grumpy mood, sore everywhere. Adding more drills makes the bag heavier.

Right

Fresh legs

Bouncy on the toes, happy to play, first step pops. That is the body saying it is ready.

Match week taper

Less time. Same spark.

A taper means training for less time in the days before a big game, while keeping a little sharp, quality work. It is a plan, not being lazy. It is also not a week of doing nothing.

Less time, same sparkLine chart for a match week. Grey bars for training time get shorter each day towards the big day. A row of teal spark stars stays at the same height every training day.MonTueWedThuFriBIG DAYSPARK STAYSTIME GOES DOWNeasy play

Keep

Keep the fireworks

Three to five clean Explosive First Step reps still count on a taper day.

Full rest between. Stop while every rep is still sharp.

Keep the touches

A few soft first touches into space keep your feet awake.

Five minutes is plenty. Finish happy.

Keep club

Club training and the coach plan come first. Taper the extras, not the team.

Ask the coach what match week looks like.

Skip

Skip the long slog

Extra laps and long grinding drills just fill the backpack.

Cut them first in the days before the big day.

Skip the second session

One short block a day is enough in match week.

No extra evening training the night before.

Skip the new stuff

Big day week is not the week to try a brand new drill or food.

Save new things for a normal week.

Kid safe. Sharp means quick, happy effort with full rest. It never means sprinting until you feel sick or lifting heavy. No adult race taper plans here.

Big day plan

Big day on the calendar. Easy days before it.

Mark the big day first. Shade the few days before it as your taper. Here is one example week with a Saturday game. Move it to fit your club.

  1. MonNormal weekClub and your usual short block.
  2. TueNormal weekShort, sharp, done.
  3. WedStart the taperShorter session. Three to five clean starts. Skip the extras.
  4. ThuShort and sharpA few quality first steps and touches. Leave wanting more.
  5. FriRest or easy playKick about, walk, early night. Normal colourful plate.
  6. SatBig dayKnown breakfast. Water early. Five minute warm up. Go play.

Example only. For a young player a taper is a few days, not weeks. Club sessions stay as the coach plans them.

Sleep and plate

Food and sleep finish the taper.

Fewer drills is only part of it. After the last hard session: a proper plate, water, then a big sleep. Empty tank still means a slow first step.

Plate within the hour

Protein builds, carbs refill, colour protects. Tick the five plate groups.

Use the after training shape on Menu.

Water back in

Sip before, during and after. Count your glasses in the Fuel log.

Water is the main drink. Juice is a morning bonus.

Settle down

Frankie’s evening already has a warm bath with salts after explosive work.

Calm body, ready for dinner and sleep.

Big sleep

Speed is built in bed as much as on the grass.

At least 10.5 hours on school nights. Early night before the big day.

Known food on the day

Match morning is not the time for experiments.

A plate you already trust, two to three hours before. Water early.

Felt fresh or heavy?

Write one word in your Train log note on the morning of the big day.

Over a few weeks you learn what your best taper feels like.

Rest day

A rest day is still on the plan.

Cross it on the calendar on purpose. Sleep in, kick a ball about, go for a walk. No full session.

Rest days are when the body rebuilds from the hard work. Name them so nobody feels guilty. Log your Fuel score on a rest day and your Journey streak stays alive.

Do a bit less. Keep the good bits. Play freer.

  • Tiredness goes down when time goes down
  • Sharp first steps stay because quality work stayed
  • Fresh legs make better decisions late in the game
  • Food, water and sleep do the quiet half of the work
